There are undoubtedly children who you know with an ACE score of some kind. You may know what is going on in their lives to cause their score and may be one of their support people.
Sadly, there are probably children that you know who have experienced some type of adverse childhood experience. Behavior challenges can be caused by many things and ACEs may just be one of the causes.
Again, it is important not to attribute challenging behavior strictly to ACEs as other factors can contribute, however being aware of ACEs can help you understand the potential causes for challenging behaviors and what you may be able to do.
First, it is important to know that a child living with multiple ACEs is going to function at a different level than a child with zero ACEs. Because of the child’s exposure to toxic stress and the stress hormone cortisol, we know that brain development is effected which can also impact the brain’s ability to regulate mood, impulses, and logical thinking.
