By having an understanding of a child's development curriculum and activities can be adjusted in a way that the child will receive greater benefits. Age appropriate can be suited to where the children are with their skills. In our multiage program we offer activities that can be simple for the younger children, but also have the ability to make it more complex for those who are older. That way no one is left out if they aren't developmentally ready.

Everyone is much less stressed out if you understand the developmental needs of your students. I have students that I simply have to give them the assignments/projects, tell them the directions and then let them go to it. If I hover, or drive the project in the direction that I want, then the kids start to get jumpy and stressed out, and so do I. I also have students that need me to hover, and need me to direct them because their developmental needs relate more to their temperment, in that they are much more shy, and much less confident.

Understanding a child's development improves teaching and caring for different children by ensuring that programs and routines created by teachers and care givers are appropriate for the developmental ranges of the children in their care. By meeting children where they are, you foster a healthy learning environment in which children can be comfortable and curious and get as much as possible out of all their interactions. Understanding development also ensures that each child is getting the proper care and support from their environment and relationships specific to them.

How can understanding a child’s development improve teaching and caring for that child?
When we take the time to truly understand the developmental stages where a child is working, teaching and caring for that child can be more in sync. We create environments for children that are both comforting and encouraging. We plan lessons to reinforce skills already learned and introduce children to new ideas and concepts. We don't frustrate or bore children by misgauging the environment, skills, or attitudes that are being learned and practiced. Most importantly, children respond by growing exponentially when caregivers are in sync with their needs!

Understanding and knowing about how children develop is extremely helpful for multiple reasons. First, it makes it easier for the teacher to adjust their classroom curriculum appropriately. Teachers will have children do activities that they can actually do and teach concepts that children will actually understand. Second, it helps the parent know where their child is at. This helps parents adjust their role in a childs development properly and will also help parents know in which areas their children need special help in. And third, it helps the child. When the adults are well educated and aware of a childs development, the child will suffer less because parents and teachers will be helping children through the developmental stages as well as helping the child where the child might not know that they need help in.

Understanding that children are different and have different social and developmental needs helps a teacher to provide a varied classroom set up for success. It helps to take time to pair up children who may help each other grow in areas they both differ in and foster a sense of empowerment that going it alone in a classroom setting wouldn't necessarily offer. I eases the frustration of a teacher when she finds successful tools and ideas to use on various children who are outside that center-box. It should encourage the teacher to reach out to other teachers, friends and the child's family to develop strategies that can be consistantly used to keep the child on a more even keel at school and at home.

You have to temper your expectations to each child based one what is expected in his or her own development. What is appropriate to teach or insist out of one 2 year old might not be the same as in another 2 year old. So with one, you'll perhaps get your desired effect, but for the other, it can actually set you (and the child) back in development.

Through proper understanding of a child's development trends, it will be much easier for both the care giver and the parents to carve out methodologies to make the situation easy for all. Further, the child too learns and equips itself with the tools used by the adults in coping up with arising situations as the child grows up to be an independent adult. Innovative techniques in dealing with the temper tantrums are far better than subjecting the child to confrontqtion.

You can adapt and tailorr make your curriculum and the things that you're teaching in your curriculum to make sure that a child who may not have had access or experience with a certain activity now has it rather than just assuming that the child has had access to a skill. By assuming that all children grow at the same rates and learn at the same time you are forgetting their individual needs and therefore you are not making sure that the child has a well-rounded education making sure that you understand their scope of knowledge. You can help a child hit different milestones by knowing where they started so you can help them get to where they need to be by teaching them activities singing songs with them having science and math activities to give them a more broad horizon. A child's brain is like a sponge soaking it all that it knows and sees and learns if you don't give them access to the activities then they might not learn that particular set of skills and then they are at a deficit.

If you understand all the children in your classroom you will be able to adjust how you are teaching the children depending on how each child learns. For example if you have a high spirited child that does not like to sit in circle time, you can go to them and join them while they are playing and talk about what you did at circle time. For the more shy child they may not want to speak out during circle time so you can have one on one with them to ask questions.

Understanding a child's development can improve teaching, relationships, and care routines for a child by meeting them where they are and pushing them into new mile stones. For example knowing that a child is able to drink from a magic cup in a typical fashion. This could mean that the child is ready for an open faced cup. After they can use an open faced plastic cup well, the child can be introduced to glass.
