Learning Outcomes

Course Overview

Often teachers are responsible for observing and documenting what they see in the classroom.  There are others who can help both onsite, and outside partners. To fully benefit children, assessments must be reliable, valid and appropriate for a child’s stage of development. Assessments aid educators in planning curriculum that promotes healthy psychological development and achievement of long-term learning goals. Assessments are also useful in determining which teaching strategies are effective. To fully benefit children, assessments must be reliable, valid and appropriate for a child’s stage of development.

  • Washington STARS Core Competency:  Content Area 3 Measurement of Child Progress (1 Hour) 
  • CDA Competency: Observing and Recording Progress and Behavior of Children (1 Hour) 
Objectives:
  • The student will analyze what observation practices work best for them.
  • Identify ways which children can be partners in monitoring their own progress.
  • The student will identify techniques for collecting child development information. 
  • The student will describe professional behavior regarding confidentiality of referrals. 
  • Identify was to communicate with families about their children’s needs
