Defusing Anger
When dealing with difficult parents, it is important to maintain professionalism. You do not have to prove who is in charge; everyone knows that you are. Never argue with parents; remember that difficult parents have more experience arguing than you do, so you probably will not win. Do not raise your voice or use sarcasm. Keep your emotions in check. You need to be a role model and stay calm, cool, and collected. If you want to be treated with respect, then you have to treat others with respect.

Sometimes, after meeting or talking with parents, you begin to understand where the child learned specific behaviors. The same behaviors in the parents can be seen in the child. As a professional, it is your job to understand the child and his/her environment so that you can teach effectively.
Many techniques can be used to overcome poor communication and help defuse the angry parent. First, never meet with an angry parent immediately. Giving the parent time to cool off and calm down is always wise. Suggest the parent call and set up a meeting within the next few days. Invite the director, or other staff member to attend the meeting. |
